How it works

A friend. Open a table with a clock or with days a move, and anyone signed in can sit down; a private table needs its code. Your rating moves after every rated game between two people.

The computer. An engine writes a short menu of sensible moves and a character picks one the way it would — the eager one takes the check, the patient one castles. The level decides how good the menu is.

The puzzle. One a day for everyone, timed from Start, one attempt. The top line says the goal: Mate in 2, or Find the win — most puzzles end not in mate but where the win is clear, a piece up or a position that cannot be held. Every move has to be the one that wins; a decent move that lets the win slip ends the attempt, and the solution, move by move with what the idea is called, is then a tap away.
